Who Is Alec Bohm?

After a breakout college baseball career with the Wichita State Shockers (where he had a .317 batting average and 126 RBIs), Bohm was selected by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 2018 MLB Draft. He made his MLB debut on August 13, 2020, and in his first at-bat, he hit a double in an 11–4 loss to the Baltimore Orioles. Ten days later, he hit his first MLB home run in a 5–4 win against the Atlanta Braves. At the end of the season (which was shortened by COVID-19), he tied for Rookie of the Year, recording a .338 batting average, four home runs, 23 RBIs and 24 scoring runs.

During the 2021 season, Bohm struggled with his fielding and was temporarily sent back to the minors for remedial work. He returned a month later and finished the season with a .247 batting average, seven home runs and 47 RBIs.

In 2022, Bohm’s powerhouse batting helped bring the Phillies to the World Series. During Game Three, he achieved an MLB milestone, hitting the 1,000th World Series home run in the second inning against Houston Astros pitcher Lance McCullers Jr. The Astros went on to win the Series in Game Six. He continued his stellar start to his early MLB career in 2023, being an integral part of Philly’s 2023 NLCS run before losing to the Arizona Diamondbacks.

How Are Alec Bohm Rookie Cards Graded?

Certified appraisers use a universal grading system that rates sports cards from Ungraded to Pristine 10. Here’s how it works:

Pristine 10: No visible condition or production flaws. Even under 10x magnification, these cards rate Perfect 10 scores across all four grading criteria: centers, edges, corners and surfaces.

Gem Mint 10: These cards score a Perfect 10 in three out of the four grading criteria, with a single tiny flaw.

Grade 9.5: Almost Gem Mint, but with a minor issue.

Grade 9: Almost Mint, but with a few minor issues.

Grades 8 and below: These cards have a variety of visible production flaws or condition issues and are graded and valued accordingly. It’s important to know, however, that cards with these grades can still be quite valuable, especially if they’re rare and popular with collectors.

Raw: Just removed from its original box or package.

Ungraded: Never been graded.

Three primary factors determine the value of a sports card: condition, rarity and collector demand. Rarity and condition can be easily determined through universally recognized grading criteria. Collector demand, however, is unpredictable and depends upon a variety of factors, all of them having to do with popularity.

If athletes lose their performance edge, retire, or otherwise fade from view, their card values may suffer significantly. However, a successful comeback, whether it’s in sports or another performance venue, may cause an athlete’s cards to catapult in value. Auction bidding wars and record prices, which are much more prevalent these days thanks to online auctions, can cause prices to spike as well.

Given the unpredictability of values, if you’re collecting as a hobby, it’s always advisable to concentrate on the cards you really like and aim for examples in the best condition you can afford.

Should I Get My Cards Graded?

Professional grading can certify the originality of your cards, so their authenticity will never be questioned. Plus, grading gives your cards a quality score that’s recognized throughout the industry.

When cards are graded, an expert appraiser examines each one for originality and condition, looking carefully for any wear or manufacturing flaws. Once the card is graded, its information is entered into an international database that is kept as a permanent record.

Sports cards that have been graded often sell for higher prices, and in many cases, they can be easier to trade or sell. Whether you decide to keep, trade, sell or donate your cards, you can take pride in the fact that the quality of your collection has been officially recognized, certified, and recorded for posterity.
