This fascinating card pays tribute to a controversy that apparently revealed too much about the Jedi Master's background.

There are plenty of amazing and intriguing aspects of the Star Wars universe that keep newcomers and longtime fans alike interested in the franchise. Yet, even the most knowledgeable Star Wars fans will agree that little is more shrouded in mystery than Yoda — the famous green Jedi Grand Master. Not much is known about the creature’s true species, and it turns out, there’s a reason for that.

CGC Trading Cards® recently certified a rare Yoda’s World, Star Wars Galaxy Series 4 (2009) Topps Lost Galaxy Promo graded CGC 7. This card’s front artwork depicts Yoda and what appears to be several of his species in a temple, offering a prayer in front of a large statue in a meditative pose. The back of the card offers some insight into what illustrator John Rheaume was thinking when he created the artwork for an earlier set that sparked some controversy.

The 2009 Yoda’s World card reproduces the front of the card that would have been featured in Topps’ 1994 Star Wars Galaxy Series 2. The original card was meant to be a rare promo — until Lucasfilm ordered Topps to recall and destroy all existing examples of the card. Nevertheless, some of those cards survived.

George Lucas, the creator of Star Wars, apparently discouraged licensees from exploring Yoda’s culture. There are even reports that certain dialog was dropped from Revenge of the Sith because it explored Yoda too closely.

Topps made 999 Yoda’s World cards available in 2009 Star Wars Galaxy Series 4 Hobby boxes, including the one recently certified by CGC Trading Cards. These cards are rare, appearing in only 1 of every 12 hobby boxes.
