What makes it special? Pot of Greed is one of the many cards included in the Yu-Gi-Oh! Forbidden List, and for good reason. The Spell card allowed players to draw two additional cards each time Pot of Greed was played, giving them a better chance of drawing whatever monster or spellcaster they needed to turn the game in their favor. At the time of its release in 2002, Pot of Greed had no limitations or counterability, making it extremely powerful.

Although Pot of Greed has been on the Forbidden List since 2005, its influence hasn’t been lost or forgotten within the Yu-Gi-Oh! community. The card has spawned nine other “Pot of” cards, each with their own abilities, and the anime has shown iconic characters such as Joey Wheeler using Pot of Greed in matches.

Did you know? In the Yu-Gi-Oh! anime, characters who use Pot of Greed will heavily explain its use and mechanics to their opponents, to the point of severe repetition. In 2014, a YouTuber uploaded a humorous compilation video showcasing each time a character uses and explains Pot of Greed in the anime. It gained over a million views and subsequently became an internet meme using the copypasta “What does Pot of Greed do?”
