CGC Trading Cards Registry Featured Set: Neo Genesis 1st Edition

Posted on 9/22/2022

This month, we are showcasing Joker785’s top-ranked and nearly complete set. Don't miss a Q&A with the collector!

Neo Genesis means “New Beginning” in Greek, and the Neo Genesis Pokémon expansion certainly embodies that term! Neo Genesis was the 1st expansion in the Neo Series and introduced the Johto Region along with Generation II Pokémon.

This set is unique in that it features two cards, with different artwork, for each of the Johto starters and all their evolutions! The set saw many changes to the TCG, including Darkness and Metal type Pokémon, Baby Pokémon and Pokémon Tools, which were Trainer Card items that could be permanently attached to Pokémon in play.

The card design also received an update with several changes made to the format and layout, including the Evolution box, the Evolution Stage display and Weakness and Resistance symbols. Joker785’s Neo Genesis 1st Edition set is almost complete at an impressive 92%, with all grades CGC 9 or higher. The set includes some beautiful high-grade examples of the Johto Starters, including a CGC 9 Totodile, a 9.5 Chikorita, and two 9.5 Cyndaquils!

Q&A with the collector

We had the chance to catch up with Joker785 to discuss this set, future collecting goals and the CGC Trading Cards Registry.

How did you get started collecting Pokémon cards?

My introduction to Pokémon was by playing the Red/Blue version Game Boy games and then the Silver/Gold version games. After enjoying the games so much, I started collecting Pokémon cards, trying to collect all the cards in each generation of Pokémon. I remember as a child the highlight of going to any store was picking up a couple packs of Pokémon cards.

What drew you to collecting the Neo Genesis 1st Edition set?

I’ve always liked the first two generations of Pokémon the most, so I decided to collect the first Pokémon set that included the second generation. This set also contains some of the first generation of Pokémon as well, so it seemed like a win-win situation to start collecting the first edition Neo Genesis Pokémon Set.

What card would you most like to add to this set?

I would like to add Pichu to my Neo Genesis Set the most. It is one of the few holographic cards that I do not have in this set and would love to add it to my collection.

What other collecting goals do you have?

I love collecting comic books and Pokémon cards. Once I finish the first edition Neo Genesis Set, my plan is to begin the first edition Neo Discovery set. I also love collecting comic books ranging from Silver Age comic books like Spider-Man and Batman all the way to Modern books such as the new Star Wars series and new Marvel/DC comic books.

What do you like about the CGC Trading Cards Registry and how has it helped with your collecting goals?

The CGC Trading Cards Registry has made collecting so much better, in my opinion. It allows you to see your entire collection at a glance and I really love the point and ranking system, which offers a competitive aspect to a hobby that has already brought so much joy. The CGC Trading Cards Registry makes it easy to keep track of which cards you have and the ones you still need to get, all in one place.
