Magic Gamma Playtest Cards Certified by CGC Trading Cards Offered in Upcoming Heritage Sale
Posted on 8/18/2022
Five fascinating early Magic: The Gathering cards certified by CGC Trading Cards™ are being offered in an upcoming Heritage Auctions sale. Bidding begins in early September for the Trading Card Games Signature Auction, being held September 23-24, 2022.
Two highlights of the sale are a pair of (1992) Gamma Playtest cards: a Time Walk graded CGC 7.5 and an Ancestral Memory graded CGC 5.5. Both cards are precursors to ones in the infamous Power Nine, the nine strongest cards in the game.
Before Wizards of the Coast released the Alpha Edition of Magic in 1993, they used Gamma Playtest cards to develop the game. The rarity of these playtest cards cannot be overstated. According to the CGC Trading Cards Population Report, CGC Trading Cards has graded a little more than 100 Gamma Playtest cards in all, including fewer than five each of Ancestral Memory and Time Walk.
The sale also includes three Artist Proofs of Forest from the (1993) Beta edition, each graded CGC 9. These Artist Proofs, which include the Eyes, Path and Mushroom varieties of Forest, are easily recognizable by their blank backs and highly desirable to collectors.
