CSG-certified Jackie Robinson Card Sells for Over $7,000
Posted on 8/2/2022
A Jackie Robinson card authenticated and graded by Certified Sports Guaranty® (CSG®) sold for $7,506 in Heritage Auctions’ Summer Sports Catalog Auction, July 21-23, 2022. The 1949 Bowman #50 Jackie Robinson card (lot 50378) is graded CSG 6.
The 1949 Bowman set was released in seven series during that year. The card features Robinson in his Brooklyn Dodgers uniform in front of a solid red background. Player names were not originally included on the front of the card. These were added to cards #109 and higher. A handful of earlier cards were reprinted with the player's name, but not all.
Jackie Robinson was born in Cairo, Georgia, in 1919. At UCLA, he was the first athlete to letter in four sports: baseball, basketball, track and football. In 1947, Robinson famously broke Major League Baseball’s color barrier, an achievement honored each year on April 15 when every player on every team wears his number 42. Robinson finished his 10-year career for the Brooklyn Dodgers with 137 home runs and 734 RBIs. He was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1962.
The CSG Population Report contains eight examples of this card, and only one of them is graded higher than this one.
